OUR COMMUNITY NEWS FOR TODAY AND THE COMING WEEK
Several locals at the “Ali’s Wedding” movie night at the Sun Theatre in support of the Hobson Bay Refugee Network. The movie was a comedy based on the true story of Osama Sami, an Iraqi-Australian Muslim, who deceives his parents into thinking he is studying medicine while struggling with the choice between an arranged marriage and the girl he loves. Addressing the crowd at the theatre were Sami, Andrew Knight and Age film critic, Jake Wilson.
“Ali’s Wedding” starred the writer, Osama Sami, who worked with Andrew Knight. The movie received the Australian’s Writers’ Guild award and the audience prize at the Sydney Film Festival in June.
Hobson Bay Refugee Network member, Ann Morrow, introduced the movie and talked about how the money raised would be spent in the “Let them stay” campaign which aims at keeping the asylum seekers who were brought to Australia for medical and other reasons but whom the Government is seeking to force them to return to Papua New Guinea by cutting off their financial support and forcing them out of their Government accommodation.
